Passion
Last night I watched our DVR'd American Idol: Idol Gives Back Episode from Wednesday night. I have to say, it surprisingly (well, maybe not) was WAY impressive.
But more than that, it made me start thinking about how I can make a difference. How can I? My current job just drains me and all I feel about is that instead of helping, I just make people VERY mad. I want a job where people don't yell at me. I don't care if I get recognition... but no more yelling at me because of some new policy, please. Also, I would like to wake up and be EXCITED and PASSIONATE about what I do. That is certainly not true here. So, how does this desire of mine fit into Idol Gives Back?
Well, I am administratively gifted (or so I think those are my strengths), so why not try to pursue a job in non-profits and charities? Ok, ok, so it is actually quite a competitive field, but I really feel like this may be what is for me. I am excited to actually go home and write my cover letters and redirect my resume to reflect my fit for these jobs.
So, I am just praying that God will put me in a job in a non-profit, because I think it is something I would enjoy.
When I told someone at work today, they asked me a very good questions. One of them was, What kind of non-profit? And while I am not 100% sure... something that benefits and helps kids in some way. I also think one that not only offers food for the hungry, but also meets education needs, etc. We can give them food and other necessities, but we should also equip them with skills and other such things. As for whether it benefits those here in the USA or internationally, I am indifferent. There is need everywhere, and I just want to put my skills, knowledge, and experience to use for good.
There you have it. My new plan... one that I am really serious about. But still, sometimes I have a way of being lazy. Will someone please ask me how it is going so that I will really be proactive? Thanks... sometimes, as I like to say, I get paralyzed by the unknown and by fear. This is one time where that could easily happen.

Charlie's Angels
Today at lunch (we went out for Billy's Birthday to Ruby Tuesday's!), we were talking about work. I mean, what else is there to talk about?
Anyway, we were chatting about our boss. We were talking about how we NEVER see her. People, I am not kidding you! We NEVER see her. About every other month or so we actually have one of our "weekly" staff meetings and she breezes in only to breeze back out again in no more than 45 minutes or so.
More than never seeing her, we also have limited to no phone or email contact with her. Since January, I have received one phone call (approx 5 minutes), and very few emails. Now, I am not working on the heavy duty important projects, but supposedly the policies and procedures I am writing are important. Well, could have fooled me... I never get feedback.
ANYWAY, in the middle of this, someone said sometimes she feels like we are working for Charlie in Charlie's Angels. HOW TRUE!!! Boswell (isn't that his name???) would the a manager (whether our current interim, or one of the previous 5, or the new one starting in May). And, the manager delievers our various missions all while "Charlie" looks on.
Ok, so if I ever post about my boss, she will be Charlie. And the new manager will be Boswell... because lets be honest... I am one of Charlie's Angels ;-).

Soda
First of all, to all of you northerners... it is SODA. not Pop. I don't care what you say. I lived in Michigan for 4 years. I still say Soda. That is what it is.
Now, my thoughts of soda (yes, I realize this is a silly post... but go with me here).
I love Coke. If you know me at all... you know that. I don't do Pepsi or other imitation Cola products. I love Coke. My other favorite soda? Barq's Root Beer. Those are my soda's of choice. And most of the time, I have NO self control when it comes to drinking them. Put it in front of me, I suck it down. Get a free refill? You bet I stand in line to fill up my cup on the way out. It is so bad.
But, maybe... just maybe yesterday I have learned my lesson.
You see, I gave up soda for Lent. I have done it before, but I decided it was time to do it again. So, I did. And now I can have it again. Except I have noticed how sick I get after I drink the stuff. Seriously! Ok, ok... I mean, not sick like I am throwing up. But sick like I feel queasy and like my stomach is ten times its normal size.
Yesterday I had a leftover Coke from my parents house in my car. I brought in to drink in the morning. Then we went to Chick-fil-a for lunch. Obviously, had a Coke with lunch and then filled it up on the way out.
I felt soooo sick for the rest of the afternoon. No kidding!! I had a headache because of the sugar overload... plus my stomach was bloated... i just felt gross. So, I think I am going to permanently cut down on my soda intake. Because I didn't like how I felt yesterday. It was no fun.
There ya go... welcome to my random thoughts!

Home and Stuff
Hey! So, I went home this weekend. It was really nice. I like going home. I don't always have much to do, but I just enjoy being around my mom and dad. And around our animals. Going home is just so nice sometimes.
This trip was good. Mom and I went shopping. I found this GREAT new jacket for work... originally $150. I got it for $44! Love it! Also got a great new pair of shorts. Sometimes I really hate shopping. I hate trying on the clothes, realizing nothing fits, etc. But, this time it wasn't too bad. The shorts were really encouraging to try on, if I am to be honest. I normally hate how i look in shorts, but these looked pretty nice. So, that was good.
What else... oh, the dog is in trouble. My parents have this dog... named Pansey... who I love. She is cute, and a sweetheart. But, she is also one of the worst behaved dogs I have ever met. This time was no different. This time around... she hate my retainer. No, I am not kidding. She ate my retainer. It was in its container... in my bag... and she decided to eat it! AHHH!! Stupid mutt. She's luck she is cute... that is all I have to say.
Other than that... the weekend was really low key. Nothing too thought provoking. I do have a LOT of stuff though. I am so ruled by all my crap. I have so many clothes... so many things that I just don't need. I wouldn't consider myself materialistic... but why do I keep all this crap? And why do I feel the need to buy more crap? I am too tied to my belongings. I also have this thing... I am a pack rat. Now, I am not too bad. I can throw things away... however, compared to the rest of my family.. i am a pack rat. And well, if I deem something important, even if it is a scrap of paper, then I can't get rid of it. I have to keep it... man... I need to stop that. I brought home so much stuff! I have no room for it. Sounds like I am ready for a spring cleaning. That will begin tonight. Someone ask me how it is going... otherwise I may not actually do it. I am just tired of being ruled by my stuff. So... spring cleaning here I come!

Wishing Away Time
I know this in not the first time anyone has ever said this... but, hey, it is on my mind
Why do we wish away time so much?
Seriously, i must wish away more that half my life... maybe even more like 75% of it, or 90% of it. Every week I start off saying, "Monday... only four more days until the weekend."
Each days is just one more day closer to... what? besides the weekend, what does it really bring me. I just waste so much time wishing for something else to come. Why not enjoy that day?
Or think about all the countdowns... til classes end... until that vacation you've been planning... until you see someone.
Why not just enjoy the present? So today is just another blah day? Why not see it as another gift? Another day to serve Christ? Why not make sure you do one thing (if not more...) of true worth everyday.
Ok, so what is true worth? How about defining it as making you feel like you day is complete, if you will. Making a day worthy of countdown. Serve someone... make someones day... do something you consider FUN everyday!
I am going to try to stop wishing away everyday... I will still countdown to fun things... such as 48 more days until I go to Florida... or four more weeks until Family Portriat Day... or 2 more weeks until Joy Prom. But today should be no less of a day!
Today I am going home. I get to see my dog and cats at home... not to mention my mom and dad. Yea! I get to spend time feeling loved by my family... it is a day worth living and enjoying (as every day should be, just so you know!)

Heaven without God?
So, every other Wednesday I go to the Gathering at Providience Baptist Church. It is their singles ministry. And I have to say, I really like it! Ok, so I'm like that annoying Freshman at CRU who sneaks in right as they start worship and leaves right after it is over (no talking to people, no making eye contact with people, etc). But, I ENJOY it! The speaker is great and, well, I think that God is totally working there.
Well... last night was no different. Currently the series is Sex and The Glory of Jesus Christ. Now, why is he giving a talk on sex to a bunch of singles who aren't have sex anyway? Well, because it is totally relevant to the world we live in and because the greater picture is how sin can rule our life and how we should be living for Christ.
Last night's topic was Dealing with the Guilt of Sin. And all he, the main speaker, said was really good. But the part that was most convicting to me, and just made me stop and think was when he posed the following question to us:
If I got to heaven and had all my friends and family, there was no pain, and everything was perfect, would I be satisfied if there was no Christ?
1 Peter 3:18 says:

Christ didn't die to bring us to heaven. He died to bring us to God! The difference between heaven and hell is that God is in heaven and absent from hell.
How many times do I miss that point? Yes, I will see loved ones when I get to heaven, and that is great... but I will be with God! That is the point. That is what is so great. And it is our sin that separates us from God and it is through Christ's death on the cross that I can have a relationship with Him.
So... maybe I need to start asking myself that more often... if I got to heaven and God wasn't there would I be satisfied. My answer should always be no. But is it always no? What am I living for?
Times like these that I am thankful that God reminds me and convicts me... brings me back to Him.
Well... last night was no different. Currently the series is Sex and The Glory of Jesus Christ. Now, why is he giving a talk on sex to a bunch of singles who aren't have sex anyway? Well, because it is totally relevant to the world we live in and because the greater picture is how sin can rule our life and how we should be living for Christ.
Last night's topic was Dealing with the Guilt of Sin. And all he, the main speaker, said was really good. But the part that was most convicting to me, and just made me stop and think was when he posed the following question to us:
If I got to heaven and had all my friends and family, there was no pain, and everything was perfect, would I be satisfied if there was no Christ?

I have the attention span of a five year old... I am not even kidding you! I canNOT concentrate when I try to sit down and do something.
I guess I noticed it a little bit in school. I would sit down and start a paper. Except about every five seconds I would check AIM, facebook, google something, clean something, anything but what I had to do.
And now at work, it is just worse. I can't sit and write an email without my mind wandering. Part of this is probably because I am just bored... but still... it is bad people.
I try to work out a reward situation for myself... but it doesn't always work. I will think, ok, get this far on the project and then you can write so and so an email. Or, do this for the training sessions, and then you get to surf the net for 5 minutes. Except that 5 minutes can certainly be dragged out for a VERY long time. This is something I will have to work on, I am sure. I need to honor God with what I am doing. And not being a good worker here is not honoring Him, that is for sure.
Oh well, lucky for you, a break means more reading my thoughts! Aren't you all so lucky?

Thankful
You know on of the scariest things to hear when you pick up the phone?
"I just wanted to let you know I am ok."
Thank God my brother is ok! Today, as I am sure you all know by now, there was a mass shooting at VaTech. VaTech is where he goes to school. At first it was nice to know he was ok... but as more news pours in, I feel more and more relief... as well as more fear.
My brother was in class when it happened! Not only that... but he is an engineer. It was an engineering building! For clarification, I am not saying he was in that building. I have yet to confirm that with him. BUT, still. It is scary.
Thank you, Jesus, for protecting my brother, for protecting my family today. Lord, I pray for all those who have lost someone today. May you be with them, comforting them, guiding them, and showing them your love. I feel for them, but not truly knowing how they must feel. Just thank you for sparing me that pain. I know that is selfish, but it is how I feel. I am so thankful my brother is hear to call me. Thank you.

So, what's your major?
Seems like a simple question, right? I mean... when you meet someone in college, it is definately one of the first three questions you get.
1)"What's your name?"
2)"Where are you from?" (and if you go to UM, then you get a response using your hand ;-))
3)"What's your major?"
Even Freshman get this question. Very few people know what they are going to major in their freshman year. I certainly didn't... my evolution went... pre-med (thanks mom), PT/OT, pre-law (again, thanks mom), christian counseling, school counseling/admin, speech therapy, etc. Then I decided Human Resources was where I wanted to end up. By that time (maybe the end of my sophomore year, but more like sometime junior year) it was too late to apply to the Business School, so I decided on the next best thing?
Study Psychology. Concentrate on organizational, it would be useful right?
Well, I don't regret my choice. I really think psychology can be facinating, and I learned a lot that is really applicable in ALL situations. I find myself using different theories in different situations, and it can help me understand how to interact with ALL people.
HOWEVER, in 20/2o hindsight, I might have chosen differently, double majored (or at least minored in something), OR at least chosen my electives differently.
Anyone who talks to me on a semi regular basis knows this next thing is true of me right now... HECK, if you have seen me at ALL this past year, you know this to be true.
I am not too crazy about my job.
And this has called me to question my choice in a career (all nine months of it... well, if you count my internship all 13 months). Am I meant for the business world? Do I like sitting at a desk 8 hours a day? What do i want to do with my life?
Well, currently the plan is to look into all avenues. Today I went to a Job Fair for Teachers in the Wake County Public School System. What I found out is that you need to have 24 credit hours in what you want to teach in order to enter the lateral entry world. (for more on lateral entry, see www.teach4nc.org, and PS, this may just be the policy of WCPS, so there still may be hope for the teaching thing...) And in all my 120 plus credits, all I could do to get my foot in the door would be to do Special Ed... not what I was planning. So, this has made me look at the classes I did take.
I probably have 24 credit hours of Social Studies classes... BUT, that is one field they DON'T need lateral entry teachers. Everyone wants to teach Social Studies. Sooo... I need to take more classes... not to mention if I ever decide to go back for my MBA or for anything else, I also definately need to take pre-reqs. Why didn't I listen to my mom and take at least an Econ course? I guess I do look at my classes and wonder why I did take some of the classes I took.
Ahhh, 20/20 hindsight. So not helpful. Oh well, not is all lost. At least I like the learning process. So, maybe I will start taking classes at a community college, online, or even at a nearby university. All while job hunting...

TGIF!
I come to every Friday glad I made it through another week.
But, seriously... i LOVE Fridays! I get to wear jeans to work... normally it means going out for lunch... and it means I have two days of nothing but relaxation in front of me. I LOVE it!
It is always funny though, because on about half of the Fridays, i would say that we at work get nostalgic and talk about the good old days with TGIF on ABC. Ok, so maybe I am exaggerating, BUT we definately talk about those quality shows.
Who could forget Step by Step? Or, Family Matters (aka, the Urkel Show)? Then we undoubtably start wondering if Full House was on TGIF, or it was just on during the week? Anyone know that answer for sure? I personally don't remember it being on Fridays. Just on the week nights... but I could be wrong. Then we wander over to how great Home Improvement was. Why don't they still have those great half hour comedies on any more? I know they were cheesy... all problems solved in 22 minutes when the music comes on signify the lesson learned where we end at the 30 min mark with a nice little bow on the package. BUT, they were great! Come ON! Corey and Topanga, who didn't want them to get married? And didn't we all love when Uncle Jessie and Aunt Becky got married and then had twins! And even though I am not too sure about them now, those Olsen twins sure were cute babies. "You got it, Dude!"
Well, enough down memory lane. They certainly don't have the great family friendly comedies anymore... but I can't complain. I still LOVED Alias while it was on... certainly was WB girl during my teen days... I watched all of those one hour tween dramas (Dawson's, Charmed, 7th Heaven, Buffy, Angel, etc). Now you can't tear me away from American Idol or Grey's. I also love the new additions this season of Brothers and Sisters and October Road.
Man, I need a life. I think I watch too much TV. Guess that is why my nickname growing up was JP Jet the TV Set (anyone know what poem that came from?)

Let's Review
I can't even remember where I found this... but I thought it was a good way to review the past year. Obviously, the person I stole it from did it as a review of 2006. I am slightly editing and doing it as a review of my first year as a college grad (the one year mark is coming up... one year on April 29th)
OH, and I am putting the lowlights first because in honor of Jenn during Bible Study... do the bad stuff first. You want to end on a good note!
The lowlights of my first year as a college grad:
1. Having to move from Ann Arbor
2. Leaving everyone in Michigan
3. Not getting the job at Google (I saw the light for a split second... and then it was snatched away!)
4. realizing I don't have summers anymore... what up with that people
5. realizing I can't just drop everything and travel like I used to (vacation days count!)
6. this job just isn't cutting it anymore (or ever... note to self just because it is a "good opportunity" doesn't mean I have to take the job)
7. Being on the job hunt again...
8. realizing the only mail you get as an adult is bills
9. UM losing to OSU and then losing at the Rose Bowl
10. not being home (or at 727) to watch "What Not to Wear" at noon anymore... and just plain not having time to watch it. I miss Stacy and Clinton.

I often have random thoughts throughout my day and think this might be a good forum to talk about what I am learning, feeling, etc. Sometimes we may have funny stories... sometimes we may have random thoughts that have made me pause and think about the world at large... sometimes it may be a survey I thought might be good to help me reflect, or just interesting to read.
Really, I am doing this for me... and if you read it... great! But, I am not going to assume that anyone really wants to know what goes on in my head... it can be pretty scary. But, alas, here I am... pondering away.
